One of my favorite gifts to receive is a book. As I say over and over again, reading is the best activity in my opinion and today I wanted to share the top books I read in 2019! If you’re looking for gifts or for something to keep you entertained over the holidays, this post is for you.
For the art or crime lover: The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt
This was my favorite book of the year, as I highlighted in last week’s post. I haven’t seen the movie (I stay away from movies that are generally agreed to be a disappointment compared to the book), so I can’t comment on how related it is. What I can tell you is that this is a captivating story and is best for a mature audience. The characters make many bad choices, and you can’t help but relate to them even though most of us are unlikely to get mixed up in the underground art scene.
For the culture lover: Behold the Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue
I enjoyed this book because of it’s fast pace and interesting premise. It’s about a man who is an immigrant and driver for an executive at Lehman Brothers right before the collapse. As I’ve said a few times, I’m a fan of stories where people lose their money, and it was compelling to read about how interconnected people’s fortune can be.
For the person who needs a boost of confidence: You are a Badass by Jen Sincero
When I say “needs a boost of confidence” I mean the person who is working their hardest to reach and exceed their potential and could use some tools to keep driving them forward. This book has a fun tone and gives you practical tips to improve your internal dialogue and be rid of your inhibitions.
For the thriller lover: The Chain by Adrian McKinty
Oh my, this was quite the book! I read it in a day and was simultaneously horrified and hooked. It’s about a series of child abductions orchestrated by people who want nothing to do with it. I wont’ go into more detail because I don’t want to give it away.
For the history lover: Issac’s Storm by Erik Larson
Larson is a phenomenal story teller and it’s wild to me how many amazing events occurred that we never hear about. When a storm of enormous proportion makes its way to the Gulf, devastation closely follows and it’s interesting to learn about how the people responded. This nonfiction book is a great read for just about anyone.
