The other day a friend of mine at school told me that she was pondering if she made the right choice to attend our small, all girls high school: Lacordaire Academy. In my usual way, I immediately countered her thought, assuring her that we have had an even better experience than our large, co-ed school counterparts. I mean, we have amazing small classes, close relationships with all of the girls, and have really learned how to be leaders. And anyway, we’re in our senior year so what does it matter now?
However, her doubt got me thinking. I never got the “normal” high school experience. My school does not have the kind of resources, like high tech labs or performance spaces, which larger schools tend to have. And most importantly, what about the boys?!? Four years without them has been most challenging 🙂 .
But, our experience has been unique. How many people do you know who had a high school graduating class of 15 people. Yes, you read that right. 15.
All of the seniors are required to give a Cap-Stone Presentation at the end of the year in which we will discuss our high school experience. As I’ve prepared fo this presentation, I realize that I did make the right decision for me. My time during high school is incomparable and unrepeatable. This environment has allowed me to thrive in a way that I do not believe another institution would have. Quite literally, only a very lucky few will ever have the experience that I’ve had at my school.
What do you think? Is a large or small high school best? Does it depend on the person?

Hello! I just came upon your blog from your comment on College Prep! First of all, I enjoy Bollywood! Although I haven't watched much (probably only 3) so I'll check out your recommendations.
Well I am 19 as well, and have found myself questioning whether I made the right choice attending an all girls Catholic high-school. It certainly limits your experiences in comparison to our co-ed counterparts. I do feel that leadership and confidence were big advantages from it, and I'm glad you find that true yourself. I feel much better knowing that I'm not alone in this.
