I love museums. I love NYC. I love museums about NYC.
I love museums in NYC (namely the Met – I can’t stop talking about it on my Instagram and have a comprehensive guide for planning your visit here), and in recent months I’ve expanded my museum going and have had a great time at 3 museums that are about NYC itself. Read on to plan your visit to these!
Museum of the City of New York
This museum is exactly what it sounds like – a fantastic selection of exhibits all centered on the city!
You can go to this museum for free with the Culture Pass that you can access with a library card. You can’t visit the same museum twice with the Culture Pass, but the Museum of the City of New York is small enough that you can see it all in a few hours.
I particularly liked the exhibits on the first floor that teach you the history of the city and have great artifacts.
New York Transit Museum
The Transit Museum is all about the various modes of transportation that have been used in NYC over the years, including the elevated railway, buses, and subways. I loved getting to explore the decommissioned subways and comparing them to what we have now.
You have to make reservations in advance and you can do this on the website, so make sure to have that ironed out ahead of time.
New York Historical Society
This is an old favorite that I have visited tons of times, not just to see the exhibits, but also for great events. Like the Museum of the City of New York there are rotating exhibits. One of the permanent exhibits I love is on the second floor and it is all about the presidents.
There are amazing artifacts, plus a replica of the Oval Office where you can pretend to be president for the day.
Friday nights are pay as you wish, so that is a great time to go!
There are many of other great museums to check out, like the South Street Seaport Museum (read this post to learn about how I was a model for them!), Hamilton’s Grange, Fraunces Tavern Museum, Federal Hall, but these are the top three must see!
