As we approach the halfway mark of 2015, I got to thinking about New Year’s resolutions and goals. I’ve mentioned that I make my resolutions at the start of the school year and decide how many books I’m going to read at the beginning of the calendar year, however I am constantly making changes and deciding to incorporate, or remove, habits from my life. It is important to continually evaluate the way you work, play, and live, so today I’m going to share what I am recommitting to and help you identify what you need to start (or get back to) incorporating in your life.
Flossing
My parents paid a lot for my teeth (I can’t even get into the amount of time, energy, tears, and money that went into my braces experience, but suffice to say it was exorbitant) and I have a duty to take care of them. Even though it takes a couple of extra minutes, I’ve recommitted to flossing daily. My pearly whites look better already.
Not watching television
Ok, so I posted a while back about why I gave up watching tv (not including Downton Abbey and Bollywood movies, naturally) but I didn’t hold myself to it. Netflix called my name a bit too strongly one day and I spent a few evenings mindlessly staring at the screen of my laptop instead of picking up a book. However, I have once again committed to abstaining from television.
Exercising
Well, not necessarily the type of exercising you may be thinking of, like at a gym or anything. I mean exercising like dancing around my room, taking a walk, and a few planks before jumping in the shower. I have never been one for formal exercise, but I do recognize its importance. That is why I have decided to make an effort to move just a little bit more each day.
Moisturizing
Along the same lines as flossing, I have begun moisturizing every night after I take a shower. My skin is softer and now smells like vanilla = happiness.
We sometimes beat ourselves up when we don’t follow through on a goal we set for ourselves or when we revert to a habit we hoped to banish. Yet, not meeting a goal is not nearly as important as what you do after. Are you going to simply shrug your shoulders and say “Whelp, I gave it a try but it didn’t work, so on to the next goal,” or are you going to recommit and push ahead? I would suggest to you the latter is the better option!
So, what do you need to recommit to? Take some time to evaluate your everyday life. Your routines, your work habits, your interactions with others, and think about what you would like to improve. Maybe you want to start journaling again or perhaps you’d like to step up your fashion game. I would suggest starting out slow by focusing on one or two new habits and growing from there. For me, it was pretty easy to start flossing again by just forcing myself to take the few extra minutes. I believe in you and know that you can build up any habit you set your mind to 🙂
