This past weekend I went up to Bryant University in Rhode Island for the annual Pi Sigma Epsilon Northeast Regional Pro-Am Sales Competition. The ride up was tons of fun with lots of singing and laughs! We checked into a hotel and I’m fairly confident that my room of girls was by far the best.
The sales competition consists of a twelve minute meeting with each competitor and a professional acting as a buyer. Two judges watch and score you based on criteria like the questions you ask and the manner in which you answer. This year, it was a B2B (business to business) sales call. We represented Multiview, an online digital media publisher, and were selling to Hussie Seating, a stadium seating company. This was my first time participating in a sales competition and when I came out of the room after talking with the judges I thought it went really well!
There were about twenty five Pro-Am (what the sales portion of the competition is called. There is also a public speaking portion) competitors from TCNJ and about fifty competitors in total. In the past TCNJ (we’re the Zeta Zeta chapter of PSE) swept the competition and we were really hoping to again.
The following day we all participated in an inter-chapter marketing case competition. It was done in Shark Tank style, so we had to come up with a product and a valuation of our company and present it to the “sharks.” My team decided on a solar powered battery charger and my mentor and I spent much of the one hour we were allotted coming up with financials to back the company. We ended up placing in the top three out of eight teams!
That night was the moment we had all been waiting for…announcement of the finalists for the Pro-Am. I was so very nervous but also excited! I’m pretty sure I squeezed all of the feeling out of Matt’s hand as we were waiting for the results #sorry. The presenter said he would list the thirteen finalists in alphabetical order. As expected, Zeta Zeta dominated but ‘F’ was passed by without me being called. I was disappointed, but happy that many of my friends were finalists. BUT THEN…the announcer called Alyssa Freitas! I was beyond surprised and thrilled! What an accomplishment it was to be a part of a team that made up ten out of the thirteen finalists. There are awards for first and second place and surprise, surprise, both winners were from TCNJ.
Matt’s marketing case team won the Shark Tank competition and he was also a finalist. We were feeling very pleased with ourselves 🙂
After such a great experience, I can’t wait for Nationals in Houston! Watch out Texas, here comes Zeta Zeta!
