So, I’m not really a huge sports fan. I love a good regatta or tennis match, but futball has never really been my thing. Oh my friends that has changed!
For the Portugal v USA game yesterday my father and I decided to go to Ferry Street in the Ironbound section of Newark to watch the big match. For those of you who don’t know, there is a large Portuguese population there so you can imagine the atmosphere for this game.
Dressed in Portugal’s colors (I am Portuguese so there was no doubt in my mind of who to support) we made our way through the crowded streets to a Portuguese restaurant for dinner. My friend Adrian from TCNJ crew met up with us at the start of the game. At half time we went to the courtyard of Iberia to watch the remainder of the game on a huge screen with tons of people (who were mostly USA fans)!
When the USA scored their second goal, the crowd went absolutely nuts! They started ringing a bell in the courtyard with a chair and threw things everywhere. Unfortunately one of the flying objects hit the screen causing it to go black. Luckily Adrian quickly whipped out his phone and we watched the remainder of the game with bated breath. When Portugal scored their second goal, Adrian and I went wild resulting in dirty looks from practically the whole place. A man with Portugal’s flag on his back climbed up the pole with the bells on it and started screaming and ringing the bell. In retaliation, the USA fans started throwing things at him. When my father got hit in the cross fire we knew it was time to go.
What an exhilarating experience! I loved every second and can’t wait to see Portugal play again!
Do you watch the World Cup? Who’s you’re favorite team?
